Blockchain: the backbone of the decentralised Web

Satoshi Nakamoto's famous white paper emerged in 2008 but it was about more than just Bitcoin. The world's first major cryptocurrency is based on the blockchain. The decentralised database of bitcoin brought with it the opportunity of using blockchain as the basis of Web 3.0 - a fully decentralised network.

If blockchain can decentralise finance, what can it do in other areas? Now that apps and other digital operations can be decentralised, we may soon see the whole internet approaching that ultimate goal. One barrier is the ability to make the blockchain ecosystem more interconnected; being able to move data from one blockchain to another. Another issue is continued data privacy and also the fact that the blockchain is immutable - you cannot easily change or delete data that has been added to it.

There are people working on all these issues of course and we believe the solutions to these will see the decentralised web take over. We are looking to shift the power balance in the users' favour. Getting widespread blockchain adoption will be a major part of this.

DID YOU KNOW? dWeb Mythbusters

MYTH: Cryptocurrency is a fad that will fade away FACT: Some high profile pundits (looking at you, Buffet) have suggested that crypto is a bubble, a fad or even a scam. In fact, as the technology matures, the ascendance of digital payments will likely usher out paper currency.

Even buying a car or a house could soon be managed regularly through computer programs run on cryptocurrency platforms. Digital tokens will be used to ease electronic transactions that involve transfers of assets and payments, often without third parties such as conveyancers, attorneys and, of course, banks.

August Jellyfish - The Black Sea Nettle

Our jelly for August a very intriguing and elusive creature!

The Black Sea Nettle (Chrysaora acholyos) is very intriguing and a very elusive jelly. It was only named by scientists in 1997. During most of the year, its whereabouts are unknown and many details about its behavior distribution and lifecycle remain a mystery.

Despite its name, it is actually a rich red to purplish in color which allows them to blend in with the dark water. The black sea nettle is a giant among the jellyfish species and can be found deep in the Pacific of Southern California. Its bell can reach up to three feet in diameter, its arms 20 feet long, and its stinging tentacles 25 feet long. Although sightings are rare when they are seen it is often as a massive swarm of creatures that coincides with red tides.

Black sea nettles are carnivorous. Their mouth is located at the center of one end of the body, which opens to a gastrovascular cavity that is used for digestion. Nettles have no excretory or respiratory organs and they generally feed on zooplankton and other jellyfish.
