Dear dWeb Enthusiast,

The dWeb Guide team has been working on how to describe Web 3.0 that encapsulates what it is (and what it means). The next iteration of the internet is not merely a bigger and better web 2.0. It is more than just blockchain, DeFi and Crypto. It more more than simply a way to thumb our noses at Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Google.

The focus of the first generation of the internet was to build the infrastructure. Search engines and read-only sites were set up and the early iterations of eCommerce began. Passive and read-only, Web 1.0 nevertheless quickly became commercial.

Web 2.0 is faster, more engaging and less static. Two-way movement of information across Web 2.0 makes sharing, participation and collaboration easy and, with smart phones, the internet is now mobile. We are able to create websites without knowing code which is making the internet more accessible.

Web 3.0, the third generation, was initially defined by privacy and security. The move towards decentralised networks will make the internet more individualised and reduce our reliance on big tech. Bu with machine-based learning, interaction between platforms and people can be faster and AI will start to understand, combine and interpret information. The IoT will allow for integration of everything and virtual reality will take off, meaning we will be regularly using synced headsets and visors, wearables and sensors, user interfaces for online gaming, eCommerce and travel.

As we grapple with what the new internet means to dWeb Guide and our readers we admit that we will never actually be able to describe the next iteration of the internet. A problem? No, it's exciting to be part of a new way of thinking, new platforms and technologies, that take us into the future.

The IoT and Decentralisation

Renewable Energy and the Blockchain

We mentioned the IoT (the Internet of Things) above. But what does this have to do with the decentralised web? Our blog contributor Cath has put together an Insights article to learn more. The rest of our articles this month concentrate on DeFi...Crypto Currencies have been hugely volatile in February and our contributors look at why this might be.

DID YOU KNOW? dWeb Mythbusters

MYTH: Blockchain is a Cloud-based Database

FACT: In reality, you should download the blockchain and run it on internet-enabled computers for operating it. Any computer in the world running a blockchain is accounted for as a node on the network. The strength of the internet connection of the computer running blockchain is a major factor in strengthening the blockchain network.

February Jellyfish Fact

Jellyfish often looks like a bell with tentacles all around the edge or hanging off the bottom. The shape of this bell is called a medusa because it looks like the evil Medusa in Greek mythology - a woman who had offended the goddess Athena who then changed her hair into snakes and made her face so hideous it turned people into stone. Medusa is also the word for jellyfish in many other languages including Greek, Hebrew and French. The medusoid body is bell- or umbrella-shaped. Hanging downward from the centre is a stalklike structure, the manubrium, bearing the mouth at its tip. The mouth opens into the main body cavity, or enteron, which connects with radial canals extending to the outer rim of the bell. The medusa is a free-swimming form; it moves by rhythmic muscular contractions of the bell, providing a slow propulsive action against the water. The other principal body type of the adult cnidarian is the polyp, a stalked, sessile form.
